  • The Laptop Sessions: “Brian Wilson” (Barenaked Ladies Acoustic Rock Cover Song)

    Friday, January 25th, 2008

    By Jim Fusco:

Welcome to your Friday edition of The Laptop Sessions! After two strong Sessions from Chris and Jeff, I’m glad I can follow up with a song that I’ve been playing for a long time now, Barenaked Ladies’ “Brian Wilson”.

This song is very important to me, as it was the song that initially got me into BNL because a friend played it for me thinking I would like the Brian Wilson references. Of course, I did. But, I loved the song, too.

I now own all of BNL’s albums, have met them and got them to sign their latest (and greatest) album, and they are now my second favorite band of all time behind the Beach Boys at a permanent #1 spot.

I love the way Masters of the Universe did this song- I had the privilege of singing lead on their version. We did five part harmonies on the chorus. There’s a live version of it here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0rBfLk70vU

So, you have a song by my second favorite band ABOUT my favorite ever songwriter! Doesn’t get much better than that.

So, here’s my solo version- I could play this one with my eyes closed, so the performance is very smooth and comfortable, if I do say so myself! ;-)

A story for another time is my theory on why I love BNL, the Beach Boys, the Moody Blues, the Byrds, and bands like that so much more than I like the Wallflowers, Ben Folds, and Dylan. I love all of their music, but I gravitate towards the first set of bands. I smell a future article!

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s Session- sure to be an “Instant Classic” by Chris!

  • The Laptop Sessions: “Too Little Too Late” (Barenaked Ladies Acoustic Rock Cover Song)

    Monday, November 19th, 2007

    By Jim Fusco:

We finally come to one of my absolute favorite bands of all time: Barenaked Ladies. I originally got into the band after hearing their song “Brian Wilson” (see my band’s YouTube videos: Masters of the Universe http://youtube.com/watch?v=u0rBfLk70vU)

I have every album from BNL, know every word to every song–a real fanatic. I think Steven Page is the best song writer of my generation, even though he is about 15 years older than me.

This song starts off their album “Maroon”, one of my favorites from them that I played about 100 times in a row. This song is much more “electric” on the album, but I think it stands up well as an acoustic because of the lyrical content.

There will be PLENTY more videos from BNL to come, so if you love any of their songs, don’t hesitate to make a request!!

Barenaked Ladies Acoustic Rock Cover Songs and Free mp3 Downloads

The Barenaked Ladies is very likely one of the most versatile and talented band of musicians and songwriters in the new music scene today. They are composed of Ed Robertson, Steven Page, Jim Creegan, Kevin Hearn, and Tyler Stewart. Hailing from Canada, these five men have each had a hand in the songwriting process over the 20 years they have been a band. Additionally, each member is known for being a talented musician – even when unplugged, they have a polished sound that never sounds over-rehearsed yet never appears awkward. In fact, they are known for their improvisations, not only creating brand new music and songs while in the middle of concerts, but also switching up the words in such hits as “If I Had $1000000.” Barenaked Ladies has been more productive than any current band, producing new music such as two albums in 2007 and a children’s album in 2008. They initiated and continue to host a music blog at their official website. Music reviews have gone both directions for them over the years, often unfairly dismissing their material, but the numbers don’t lie – they have the distinction of having had a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. There have been and will continue to be many Laptop Sessions cover songs of their material.
