The Laptop Sessions: “No Lights, No Sound” (New Music - Original Song by Indie Songwriter Chris Moore)
Wednesday, October 1st, 2008
By Chris Moore:
Tonight is the beginning of a side project that will take me as late as next summer to complete… a new album! You may be asking yourself, okay, so you’re going to record another new album. It’s about freakin’ time. And you may also be wondering what that has to do with the Laptop Sessions.
Well, I’m going to tell you!
Having been thinking so much recently and having been so inspired by a number of factors — not the least of which are hearing some leaked tracks from Jim’s forthcoming release and some awesome new albums this year by songwriters like Brian Wilson and bands like R.E.M. — I have been working on and arranging tracks for a new album, ironing out arrangements, finishing lyrics, etc. Now, I bring my motivational and promotional project to the Laptop Sessions…
Every three weeks (or so, once we hit the new year), I will release a demo of another track from the new album. Not only will I release the tracks, but I’ll do so in order! Thus, tonight, I bring you what will be track one of my next album. Now, in the spirit of the Laptop Sessions, I bring this song — “No Lights, No Sound” — to you as a recording of only my third complete performance of the song ever. In other words, I rolled out of bed, finished writing the lyrics and the entire middle section, and recorded this demo. This is hot off the presses. This is the song in about as early a form as you’ll see here on this music blog.
And, that being said, I hope to get an amazing, yet fairly affordable producer to make it the perfect opening track! (Anybody know a good producer, by any chance? ;- ) I’m thinking either Rick Rubin or Jim Fusco. I figure I’ll send out for a bid in a couple of months and see what’s in my budget. (Actually, no offense to Rubin, but I’d take JIm any day. Even though he does NOT wear a fashionably immense and flowing beard…)
As you listen to the demo, you might notice that it’s a bit slow at first for an opening track. I’ve since worked out a better version of the tempo I’d like to use, and I hope to have it build up right after the chorus and incorporate drums, bass, etc. before getting to a solo and eventually ending with a repeat of the first verse with only an acoustic and lead vocal. But, we’ll see what the finished version holds.
In closing, this really puts the pressure on me to finalize my track listing and finish writing these songs. I plan to record them as soon after writing them as possible, which will make it all the more interesting to look back and compare them to the final versions some day! (And I don’t doubt that some won’t make the final cut, or that I’ll change the order as I go, but I’ll try my best to decide an order soon and stick to it.)
I truly hope you enjoy this side project for me here on the best acoustic cover song and original music blog in the universe!! Don’t forget to come back tomorrow and Friday for a double dose of one Jeffrey Copperthite…
See you next session!

The Laptop Sessions: “I Need…” (Original Acoustic Song by Songwriter Jim Fusco)
Wednesday, September 24th, 2008
By Jim Fusco:
Welcome to another edition of “Original Wednesday” here on the best music video blog of all time: the Laptop Sessions!
After the success of last time’s “Jim Fusco downer song from ‘My Other Half’”, I decided to give you another cut from the same album: “I Need…”. Actually, in a half-hour span, I wrote these two songs. It was a difficult time for me- I knew my relationship was ending, but dealt with it by writing two “downer” songs, but with different meanings. On one hand, I had “I’m Just Waiting” that was about the end coming in the relationship. The other, this tune: “I Need…”, dealt with the fact that I was going to be without someone again. That wasn’t something I was too happy about, but new love will always come eventually. It’s MUCH better than being unhappy in a relationship, I’ll tell you that.
That’s why, over the past few years, I haven’t had much to write about relationship-wise, as I’ve had such a steadily growing relationship. In fact, the songs on my upcoming album (which I’m mastering tonight) that deal with my relationship are simply about my unhappiness that after all of this time, I’m still forced to be away more often than not. I’ve waited long enough, I say!
I hope you enjoy tonight’s original Wednesday Laptop Session. I’d write more, but as a guy, I find that I can’t do two things at once. I have to go back to mastering my songs now so I can give a copy to a select few to review and tweak. Until Saturday, enjoy Chris and Jeff’s videos!

The Laptop Sessions - “On the Shelf” (Original Wednesday Acoustic Video by Jeff Copperthite)
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008
By Jeff Copperthite:
Wow it seems so long since i’ve done an original Original Wednesday. I checked my video session catalog (which is nearing 100 by the way) and the last true original song I have brought you (read: a song that I have written) was actually on July 15. That is OVER TWO MONTHS! I couldn’t let it go on any longer!
So i’m digging one up for the sessions today. Finally, not only an original tune, but a PREMIERE, never before seen or heard, Jeff Copperthite original.
All my fans and my sessionmates are familiar with my playing style. I feel this song is somewhat of a deviation. The guitar part I play to this song is probably among the more creative ones I have recently conceived. The lyrics - well, remember I am a happily married guy, but that doesn’t mean someone can’t tell a story that isn’t personal to the writer. Plus, it fits the “spirit” of the guitar part quite well.
Perhaps this song will make it to the recording studio next year for another album. I’ve felt the writing itch for a couple months now. Scott & I are going to be getting together in the near future to do some jamming as well. Perhaps a new Quilt EP or album is not that far in the future. And everyone that knows both of us know, that he’ll blow me out of the water on the guitar.
My viewcount has reached 42K, and I have three new requests to work on for my upcoming sessions, but now back to your regularly scheduled “New Bands 2.0″ week. I’ll be back Saturday covering a band that has already made me say “Holy crap why did I pick this band?” - not because they don’t sound good, but because they sound incredible, and covering them will be a tall order. I’m up to it, however.
And tomorrow, Jim will be back with another new band (feel free to register it under the “Thumpin’ Thursday™” tag Jim), and Chris will be back to satiate our eyes and ears with another new band.
I hope you enjoyed this edition of Original Wednesday!

The Laptop Sessions: “All The Days” (Original Music by Indie Songwriter Chris Moore)
Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
By Chris Moore:
Hello and welcome to my favorite day, a day that comes only once every three weeks for we songwriters of the Fusco-Moore Productions music blog… Original Wednesday! Today, I took a trip down memory lane to my last solo release before joining the band MoU (Masters of the Universe with Jim Fusco, Mike Fusco, Becky Daly, and Cliff Huizenga). Today, I recorded “All the Days,” the penultimate track off my EP Love Out of Fashion. (Using “penultimate” in my post is my answer to Jim using — honest to God — the word “leviathan” properly and casually in a conversation the other day. I didn’t even know how to pronounce the word… :-))
This was the first time I really experimented with such recording techniques as lead vocal doubletracking and sound effects such as my ZOOM guitar pedal. I have a lot of fond memories of rushing home after school or work during the summer to record this album in the basement of my parents’ home. I finally felt like I had mastered the computer program I used to record at the time, and I can’t count the number of mix CDs I made. Each time I would finish the recording of tracks for a song, I would burn a CD and listen to it in my car wherever I went — to work, to school, to the store. I’ve written on the blog here before about pulling over late at night to listen to the songs as loud as the volume would go, making mental notes of changes I would make to the final mix the next chance I got. Lots of fond memories.
My only regret, particularly on a track like “All the Days” that I felt had a lot of promise, is that I didn’t have a way to record drums. It’s a well-known fact that a drumbeat never hurts, especially when it comes to my playing… It was as a result of this regret that I’ve made the resolution to never record another album unless a drummer is available and raring to go.
So, I hope you enjoy this little trip down memory lane for me; I probably haven’t played this track since I recorded it. Well, that’s not true — I think I’ve played it once or twice, but over several years…
Oh, and I hope you’ll take a listen to the recorded version so you’ll understand why this music video starts differently from any other cover song session I’ve recorded.
Okay, that’s all for me. Don’t forget to hurry back tomorrow for another all-new acoustic rock cover song session from Jeff. And now, I should check on the Mets who were winning by a lot earlier, then tied, and just pulled ahead… (Come on, Mets!!)
See you next session!

The Laptop Sessions: “I’m Just Waiting” (Original Wednesday Jim Fusco acoustic song)
Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008
By Jim Fusco:
Welcome to another “Original Wendesday” edition of The Laptop Sessions! I hope this once-a-week treatment is becoming a favorite of yours, because we truly believe our original tunes can stand alongside the other major-label bands’ songs we play on the music video blog.
If you want to hear any of our original music, make sure to visit the websites of Jim Fusco (me), Chris Moore, Jeff Copperthite, and our band (with Mike Fusco) Masters of the Universe.
Today, I bring you a “classic” Jim Fusco tune from the epic album, “My Other Half”. This album is a unique concept where it takes you on a journey from the beginning to the end of a relationship. How did I get my inspiration? Well, I lived through it and wrote a song each step of the way. I didn’t do it on purpose- it just happened. Strong emotions always make me want to write.
I’ve never had trouble coming up with tunes for my songs. I’ve always had them floating around, waiting to be written out. The trouble I have sometimes is coming up with something substantial enough to write about. That’s why you’ll notice many of my songs are about some sort of big event or emotional period in my young life.
During the days of the “My Other Half” album, relationships were so new to me- I wanted to write about every facet of them. That’s probably why I ended up with over 25 tracks…
Nowadays, things (as far as relationships go, at least) have definitely settled down. I’m happy, but comfortable, too. So, you’ll notice that the songs off of my upcoming album (who knows when that will come out…) are mostly about when something or someone bothered me in some way. I think you can learn a lot about me, my life, and my emotions by listening to my albums in order.
This song was written in one night with another song that I’ll be bringing to you next Original Wednesday in three weeks. I was in a very bad mood back in January of my senior year in high school. I knew my first ever relationship was going to end, but it hadn’t yet. I didn’t want it to because ANYTHING was better than being alone at that point. But, I didn’t know when things were going to happen.
Isn’t it funny to have those moments when you know something is going to happen, you can’t stop it, but you’re not sure when it’s all going to come to pass? Well, that’s how I felt then, and it ended up in a simple, yet heartfelt song.
I think some may think this is a kind of “suicide-song”. It isn’t and was never meant to be. “The end” that I speak of is the end of the relationship, not my life. And for that matter, if I ever felt that way, I wouldn’t end my life- I would continue living just to get back at all the people that made me so miserable in the first place!
Okay, enough of the explanation: get to watching this video! I hope you enjoy it. I’ll be on the “cover song” track on Saturday with another great tune from Paul McCartney. Stay tuned to the best music blog on Earth!

The Laptop Sessions: “I Know A Girl” (Mike Fusco Original Song)
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008
Hey there! Well, it’s Original Wednesday, and Original-ly this post should have been Jeff! But he was nice enough to call me and offer the spot to get back on blogging. So, out from the bullpen I come, (hopefully more effectively than the Mets bullpen!) with this original acoustic laptop session for you to enjoy. I remember everything about writing this song- I remember being embarassed by the oddity of the tune. But, as some of you may know, songs come to me. So I don’t really have control of the style or genre or tune…and most of the time the words! It hits me like a sack of bricks. So what you get are raw and honest tunes, with simple lines that end up being my favorite.
This song has a spanish-feel to it, and the middle where chords ring out is very Dennis Wilson sounding. Some of my favorite lines are “She’s easy to love, and you can bet she’s so good lookin’…but in this case there’s more than meets the eye…” All of these words were auto-biographical, and you can hear it in the lyrics, like you’re a fly on the wall for these interactions- “And sometimes when I look in your eyes, I see confusion”… “When she sits across from me”…”Sometimes when I sleep, your eyes- they look so deep,..and in them I can see nothing but love”.
It was about the stress of romance and the meaning of dreams (where this song was written) and how during the day, facades can be put on, but at night, your conscience isnt always there to protect you from talking in your sleep. One of my favorite lyrics, in its simplicity, is “And somehow I know that I’ll never stop loving you”. The last verse, after a pause- was a joke in music form… when people think it ends, I hop in saying I wasn’t through speaking (hope i got you on it!) I remember playing it for Jim when it was recorded, saying “Wanna hear this stupid, weird song I just did?” and when he finished listening to it, he kept the headphones on and said, “Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?…that’s the best song you’ve ever written” =)
oh jim, this is for you… you’ll be the only one that gets it.
