  • The Laptop Sessions: “Fallen Horses” (Smash Mouth Acoustic Rock Cover Song)

    All right! We’re back! After an absence that seemed longer than it actually was, laptopsessions.com is back up and running. In the time the site was down, I was scheduled to post a video this past Sunday, and I did. The only way you’d have already seen it is if you were on Youtube and decided to search for Smash Mouth.

    Well, I uploaded another cover from that band. From the same album “Astro Lounge” that I drew from earlier, I bring you “Fallen Horses”, a great song you may have never heard of. The original song has a really cool groove to it, and a great melody line that the guitar plays. I play it in the opening of the song, and then play the regular guitar part the rest of the way.

    I already had received one positive comment on Youtube for this song, so I’ll let that speak for itself. I hope you enjoy this upload, and I also hope you’ll come back later today for Chris’ next video. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it three times as much as you normally would…

  • The Laptop Sessions: “Waste” (Smash Mouth Acoustic Rock Cover Song)

    Good Friday to you! Welcome to today’s edition of The Laptop Sessions, and I bring you a great acoustic number from Smash Mouth.

    The song is “Waste” from Smash Mouth’s album “Astro Lounge”. It is not a typical Smash Mouth song, and I think of the bands i’ve heard of they definitely have a unique sound. I always loved this song when it came up on the play list. “Fallen Horses” is a song i’d also like to do in a future Laptop Session, but that won’t be for a while.

    I like this version a lot, and it goes along well with the album version.

    I also hope you may get a chance to come see The Laptop Sessions crew live tomorrow at Testa’s restaurant in Southington, CT. We’re expecting a good crowd. I will be playing this song as one of my solo songs.

Smash Mouth Acoustic Cover Songs

Smash Mouth is known mostly for their 1999 album “Astro Lounge”, and it’s immensely popular single “All Star”. Steve Harwell also has a unique vocal style that is instantly recognizable. Oddly enough, his vocal range is quite high. His bass is solid, as is his higher tenor range. “He is among the few that can pull that off”, says Jeff. “I have a harder time covering his songs because of that bass-to-tenor change that seems to happen in all the songs I have covered.” Smash Mouth is also known for their incredibly fun live shows and animated performances. They are considered “pop rock”, but their influences are clearly much more of the classic rock variety. Harwell points out that “The Beach Boys” were among his chief influences.
