  • The Laptop Sessions: “The Way You Do The Things You Do” (The Temptations Acoustic Rock Cover Song)

    Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

    By Jim Fusco:

Welcome to the Laptop Sessions for Tuesday! Today, I bring you yet another new band to the Sessions. Well, it’s not a “new” band by any means, but we’ve haven’t done them before: The Temptations!

This song is also in contention for the longest song title award. I’ve always liked this song, but for some reason it moved its way quickly up my list when I thought of it one night and learned how to play it.

Temptations songs are a bit harder to do, like the Beach Boys, because of their usual harmonies, but it’s fun to take a song that has so much more production and make it into a solo performance. That, in my opinion, is what makes the Laptop Sessions so unique.

Over the next few weeks, it’s going to be my focus to do as many new bands as possible. I still have a couple of songs in the reserves to get to first, but look for a wide array of new artists to come!

One of the most popular performing groups in the sixties, the Temptations were one of many Motown artists whose new music flew to the top of the charts. Hits such as “My Girl” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do” brought them fame and favorable music reviews. The Temptations, although they did not participate in the songwriting process, drew on the talents of such famous songwriters as Smokey Robinson. However, their songs are not considered cover songs, as this system worked such that a song would be written and specifically given to them; theirs was the first and often definitive version. Likewise, they did not play acoustic guitar music or any other instruments, but instead they choreographed their movements on stage – in the days before music videos and YouTube videos, this band gave their audience something interesting to watch while they enjoyed the singing. It seems like it would be difficult to translate a Temptations song into an unplugged acoustic song Laptop Session, but that has not been the case – for instance, songwriter Jim Fusco was recently recording and then released an excellent acoustic cover version of “The Way You Do The Things You Do.”
