  • “Rhino Skin” (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Acoustic Rock Cover Song) – The Laptop Sessions

    Saturday, April 19th, 2008

    By Chris Moore:

Hello and welcome to another all-new Laptop Session! Today is a special treat for me, as I’ve finally summoned up the courage to sing one of my favorite Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers songs. Is it a classic like “Free Fallin’”? Well, maybe not. Is it a great album cut like “A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me)”? Um, no, but I’ll probably cover that one in the future.

This is my version of “Rhino Skin” off of the 1999 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album Echo. I’ve covered the title track previously (click here to listen!), and I had so much fun doing it (and such a response — it’s my #3 most viewed video!!) that I had to record another one from this album.

As a final note, I’m eagerly awaiting the April 29th release of Mudcrutch, the self-titled debut from Tom Petty’s recently-reformed high school band. I can’t wait!!

For now, though, I’ll look forward to the more instant gratification of the “session-a-day” project at www.LaptopSessions.com … Be sure to check back tomorrow for a brand new video from Jeff!

    See you next session!

  • “Learning To Fly” (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Acoustic Rock Cover Song) – The Laptop Sessions

    Sunday, March 30th, 2008

    By Jeff Copperthite:

Good evening, and welcome to your Sunday edition of The Laptop Sessions. I’ve got another great song to add to our growing library, and it’s our 2nd song from Tom Petty.

From his 1991 album “Into the Great Wide Open”, the song I have performed is “Learning To Fly”. While simple, the song has been popular since the album’s release. The song has a great set of lyrics and is about a time that Tom saw an interview of a pilot, who said “Learning to fly is easy, but coming down is the hard part”, hence the chorus inspiration.

I hope that if you are in the CT area that you will come see me perform with Masters of the Universe this coming Wednesday! We are playing all kinds of songs and we had a practice session at my condo today. My fingers look like they are blowing bubbles, after practicing on the bass for 3 hours today w/ Chris, Jim, and Mike.

Stay tuned tomorrow for another great session by Jim.

  • “Echo” (Tom Petty Acoustic Rock Cover Song) – The Laptop Sessions

    Thursday, January 17th, 2008

    By Chris Moore:

Welcome back to another edition of the Laptop Sessions!

One of my favorite Tom Petty albums is the little-known 1999 album Echo. I found it used in an FYE about a year ago, and although it may not be his best album ever, it immediately grew on me. There are some really great tracks on it (out of 15 tracks, you’d hope so!), including the title track that I’m playing here. It took me a bit of practice to be comfortable playing this song without a cheat sheet in front of me — certainly not for the chords, but for the words, which change every chorus. In the end, it was a lot of fun, and I’ve been playing it pretty much every day since I recorded it.

Some day, I might get up the “balls” (as Tom Petty might sing) to play “Rhino Skin,” one of the best tracks on the album. Take a listen to it some time, and maybe you’ll see why I’m not quite there yet… :-)

Don’t forget to look for another great Laptop Session with Jeff tomorrow, Jim the next day, and then [insert: Arnold Schwarzenegger voice] I’ll be back!

Tom Petty Acoustic Rock Cover Songs and Free mp3 Downloads

Throughout his songwriting and performing career, Tom Petty has stood for the integrity of the music artist’s rights and freedoms. He has been a strong believer in reducing corporate control over the creativity and productions of songwriters, as evidenced in his Last DJ album. Early in his days with the Heartbreakers, Tom Petty’s combination of electric guitars and acoustic music has distinguished him as one of the best new rock music artists of his time. Not only has he developed a style all his own for his original material, but he has also recorded cover songs, most notably Gene Clark’s “I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better,” included on the Full Moon Fever album, the release that catapulted Petty to the top of the charts with such singles as “Free Fallin.’” With the release of such albums as Highway Companion and the self-titled Mudcrutch record, Petty has provided fans with a slew of songs composed with simple chords and thus easy and fun to play and sing along to.
