Welcome to Friday’s edition of #1 week. Today I bring you a new band to the sessions, and another great #1 hit.

You must live under a rock if you don’t know the band U2. Off of their album “The Joshua Tree” is one of their only 2 U.S. #1 hits, which is competing for longest song title. Again, I had to take out a bunch of the spacing to get the title to fit in Youtube’s field.

The song “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” is a classic to me, since I have known it since I saw the music video as a kid. I loved the chorus and I think I annoyed my entire family running up and down the halls of the house. I have always enjoyed U2 for reasons such as Edge their guitarist, and Bono has an incredible range.

Speaking of Bono’s range, I originally recorded this session with me singing it an octave lower. However, I wasn’t happy with it. So I decided to sing it in the intended range. You can tell that some notes are hard to hit, but I feel that you will enjoy this performance more, despite the vocal difficulties I may appear to be having.

You will also notice my wife sitting in the background listening on the performance. She also selected the regular range video for you.

Tomorrow Jim will close out #1 week with another great #1 song. Be sure to come back tomorrow for that!

  • “All I Want is You” (U2 Acoustic Cover) – The Laptop Sessions

    Thursday, March 26th, 2009

    By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to Thumpin’ Thursday w/ Jeff!  Today I bring you another band we’ve covered in the past.  This one, however, is more in my register than the past ones from this band.

Not to say I did a bad job previously – it takes a lot to cover a song from U2.  Bono is an incredible singer (although I do find his single word name a bit pretensious).  This particular song came from a sort of video documentary that they put out after their hit album “The Joshua Tree”.  This song is from that movie “Rattle and Hum”.  Of course, it was also released as a single.

I had my formal observation in school today, so I’ve been wired all day since it’s finished with.  I got to relax this evening, and enjoy some basketball.  Even though I didn’t pick UConn to get into the Final Four, i’m still hoping they do.

Enjoy this evening’s video, and i’ll see you next week!

    By Chris Moore:

Hello and welcome to a brand new week.  Thanks for spending a little bit of it here on the Laptop Sessions music video blog with the latest edition of “Chris Moore Monday.”  No one understands the pressure I’m under!  I mean, there’s a lot riding on this video — if I’m good, I’m helping your week get off on the right foot.  If I’m not so good, then…  Well, let’s not even consider that option.

For tonight’s selection, I’m doing something that I’ve only done once before…

…make an enjoyable recording!  No, I’m just kidding.  (Not about the “enjoyable” part, I hope…)

This is only the second time that I’ve recorded a song by not only one but two artists whose work I’ve never played before.  Tonight’s subjects?  U2 and B.B. King.  (Jeff has already recorded U2, but B.B. King is a new addition to the blog.)  Why, you may ask?  Well, the big “New Music Tuesday” release of tomorrow, March 3rd, is No Line on the Horizon, U2′s first new studio album in five years.  It’s already making waves, having received a five-star rating from Rolling Stone magazine.  Now, I’m not often one to agree with Rolling Stone, but I am very curious about this album.  After all, Rolling Stone has never given U2 the five star salute.  Bono and company have come close, earning 4.5 stars for 1991′s Achtung, Baby, but this is the first time they’ve received 5 stars for an original studio release.

To be fair, this isn’t their first 5 out of 5 star experience — the band’s re-release of The Joshua Tree was granted 5 stars.  I just listened to that album last night for the first time, and although I wouldn’t give it five stars, I very much enjoyed it.  The first three tracks are a veritable U2 greatest hits, and there are several deep cuts that are great songs.

So, tomorrow is a new music Tuesday to look forward to.  To hold you over, I’ve gone back into the U2 catalog and hauled out an oldie but goodie.  “When Love Comes to Town” was originally released in 1988 on Rattle and Hum (a title that is taken from lyrics in the song “Bullet the Blue Sky,” from The Joshua Tree).  This is a song I have always loved — there’s such an energy between Bono and King’s vocals and the addition of King’s guitar to the instrumental mix.  I have always felt that the song had a timeless feel, and I would have loved to hear someone like Johnny Cash record a version of it.  So, for my cover song music video version tonight, I’ve slowed it down a bit and taken it down an octave (which is convenient, since my vocal chords are no match for Bono’s typical soaring range!).

    The result?

Just like I thought, this song has such a classic feel to it that it lends itself to a stripped-down acoustic arrangement.  Still, my version is no match for the energy, emotion, and rocking presence of the studio version!  (And I can’t quite figure out what “catch that flame” means…  I sing “catch that plane,” which is what I’ve always thought he said, but the official U2 lyrics page says “flame.”  Oh, well…)

I hope you enjoy this U2 cover, and I hope it tides you over until tomorrow’s release of No Line on the Horizon.  Until then and until an all-new Jim Fusco Tuesday…

    See you next session!

  • “With or Without You” (U2 Acoustic Cover Video) – The Laptop Sessions

    Monday, September 8th, 2008

    By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to what feels like “just another manic monday” (damnit, I just had to quote the Bangles – shoot me now).  One of the busiest days of my…entire…existence.  And I still found the time to bring a session to you today.  Session-a-day must roll forth.  Getting right there to the end of 2008 will see the release of 365 videos between four performers.  Simply amazing that we are nearing the end of the year.

Ok, away from that, today’s session.  I have to admit, this is a song i’ve known how to play for a long time, and i’ve kept it in store for a day like today where practice time was small at best.  A hit by U2 from their album “The Joshua Tree” is the song “With or Without You”.  This song, similar to a previous session by Tom Petty “Learning to Fly”, features a repeated four-chord pattern that plays through the entire song.  Again, however, the original song is not based on an acoustic guitar so again, making it a Laptop Session is really interesting.

I did a decent job singing this one, but did mistime one word, and one chord slightly.  Since I imagine many youtube viewers don’t read the entire description, i’m sure i’ll have to filter out some comments in the near future about those very small mistakes.

Anyway, enjoy today’s session, and make sure you’re here tomorrow for 100KJim’s newest session!

When people hear someone mention the band U2, most people will know who they are. They are among the most well known musical acts throughout the world. It would take a lot of words to mention their numerous albums and singles, but safe to say they are all popular and well-known. Their music translates easily to acoustic cover songs because the guitar influence (acoustic or electric) is so readily heard in all their songs. Bono, their lead singer, is probably the most well known single-named singers in the world, and has an incredible vocal range. Jeff says “I need a few glasses of cold water before and after trying to emulate Bono’s singing. I’ve been pleased though because most people have shown appreciation for my efforts in that department. Funny thing is I was suffering from a cold when I recorded the two cover videos for the blog. I almost want to re-record them with my ‘healthy’ voice!”. U2 is surely a band that Jeff will be covering again. Some of his favorite songs are “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “Discotheque”, and “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of”, and surely we will see some new music video covers from Jeff out of these songs.
