“Amnesia” (Toad the Wet Sprocket Cover)

By Jeff:

Welcome to your late edition of Thumpin’ Thursday!  A day that is so awesome that it can only come once per week, otherwise the unexplained will occur.

No, I don’t understand it either, but I forget what I was going for there…

I must have Amnesia.

Wait!  I do!  It’s the song from Toad the Wet Sprocket’s final album “Coil” called “Amnesia!”

Excuse me while I walk to the door that you’ve inevitably sent me too…

Ok i’m back.  The song and band were one of my favorite “I seem to be the only one who has heard of this album” records from my childhood.  I’m glad that with my higher understanding of guitar and music, that I can finally play some of the songs from this album because they are among my favorites.

This song is well suited for guitar and really comes out nicely on the sessions format.  This is another take 1 as well, which is always a good thing.

I’m so excited that in about 36 hours, I will be at Jim’s wedding, which I know him and Becky are very excited and nervous about (well, at least I think so on the latter).  It should be a blast and I look forward to it.  I also can’t wait to hear what brother Mike will divulge about the Notorious J.I.M.

Ok that’s it for this evening.  See you next week where i’ll be bringing you a new session while Jim gets the old pasty-white sunburn in Hawaii.

“Crazy Life” (Toad the Wet Sprocket Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to your Saturday night fever edition of The Laptop Sessions!  Today I bring you another return engagement with a band previously featured on the sessions, and it is a great song.

The band is Toad the Wet Sprocket (and again, don’t ask – I’m not too sure where that name came from either), and today I am covering another song from their final album “Coil” (well, I should now say their most recent release) called “Crazy Life”.  It is a simple, yet catchy tune with a great strum pattern.  The lyrics are quite interesting and I still have not fully understood what they mean.  There are a few historical references you’ll hear though.

It is appropriate that I am doing this song today.  I really had a “Crazy Life” kinda day, where I ejected only my 2nd coach in my 2 year umpiring career.  It takes a lot to get to me, and if you go onto my ejection list, you must’ve done something wrong.  Baseball coaches, if you are reading this, do not argue balls and strikes – unless you’re looking for an excuse to go home.

I hope you enjoy today’s session, and I know you will be back to see Jim’s latest installment of the sessions.  We’re rolling along as usual!  Seeya next time!

“Dam Would Break” (Toad the Wet Sprocket Cover)

By Jeff:

There’s a saying i’ve been hearing lately – “mush brain”.

Because I feel like I have that.

Let me preface with this.  I was rendering the video last night to prepare it to upload.  My wife says “Can you help me with the laundry?”, and because i’m such a chivalrous gentleman, I let the laptop continue to render the video and went upstairs to help with the laundry.  3 loads of laundry later, I say “Wow I’m bushed.  I better head to bed.”  And off I go to sleep.

And then I wake up this morning and say “Holy crap I didn’t upload the video and post about it.”  Needless to say, I feel like a total dbag.

So while i’d technically like to call this “Fail Friday”, but i’d rather call it “Thumpin’ Thursday which is too cool to be posted on time.”

Anyway, on with the video.  Tonight I am covering a song from Toad the Wet Sprocket called “Dam Would Break”.  It’s from one of my favorite albums.  The song is “Dam Would Break” and it’s the 4th track from the album “Coil”.  I remember trying to figure out how to play this song 10 years ago before I knew what a capo was.  Naturally I didn’t know enough chords at the time to figure out this song without a capo.  It’s a wonderful tool for sure.

You’ll also notice the new guitar strings.  Sound good don’t they?  I wish I could say the same about the forgetful person playing the song.

I’m began my semester last week, so if any of my current students are reading this, I hope you did your homework!  (It could easily be any of the 80+ students I have)

Ok i’ll see you in 6 days for a (hopefully on time) new video!

“Whatever I Fear” (Toad the Wet Sprocket Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to Sunday’s edition of the Laptop Sessions, and I am VERY excited about this upcoming week. A lot will be happening over the course of the next 7 days, but in all of it we will continue to provide you with a new session every day, and as we roll onto the week all of our sessions will be from bands each of us have never did a session for.

Our first entry to this mini series is a song from a little known band named “Toad the Wet Sprocket”. The band is known for singles such as “Fall Down”, which still may make an appearance in future sessions. But for now, I will do a song from their last album before their breakup “Coil”, the song “Whatever I Fear”.

This song is the album opener, and the album itself is full of introspective melodies, including this one. If you have a chance to listen to it you’ll find a few songs on it that really stand out. The singles that were released didn’t chart except for the song “Come Down”, and the album is probably the least known of theirs.

Regardless, I bring to you “Whatever I Fear”. I hope you enjoy it, and remember my new album “Greenlight” is coming out next Sunday!! I hope you find your way over to the Fusco-Moore Store and take a listen, and perhaps a purchase, of my new album.
